New figures reveal UK regions with greatest solar capacity

Published on

Fresh statistics have uncovered which parts of Britain possess the most substantial solar energy capacity.

The figures demonstrate differences between regions in uptake of solar technology, with the South East ranking among the highest-performing areas, trailing only the South West, according to Solar4Good’s examination of energy statistics.

The South East achieved a total solar capacity of 2,798.6 megawatts and produced 2,301,811 megawatt-hours of electricity.

Across the country, homeowners have fitted 1,688,163 solar setups, providing a combined capacity of 18,225.14 megawatts and generating 14,099,076 megawatt-hours of electricity—representing approximately 4.4 percent of Britain’s entire yearly electricity usage.

Manan Shah from Solar4Good stated that this equates to roughly 4.4 percent of the electricity consumed by Britain each year, demonstrating the considerable capability domestic solar installations possess for power production.

The information indicates this capacity belongs to 1.6 million of the estimated 28 million properties examined, equivalent to about a 6 percent take-up rate, making it clear how expanding solar adoption could dramatically boost its contribution to national energy supply.

Looking at regional performance, the South West dominated Britain with the greatest capacity and power output, with the South East, Eastern region, East Midlands, and Wales filling positions two through five.

Examining the data at local authority level, Cornwall took the top spot in Britain, generating 536,496 megawatt-hours of solar electricity.

This was succeeded by Wiltshire at 481,786 megawatt-hours and Somerset at 429,123 megawatt-hours, claiming the leading trio of positions for the South West region.

Mr Shah remarked that the data revealed certain localities are falling significantly short of others in realising their capabilities, and given circumstances where Britain’s capacity to meet its energy requirements could become uncertain, it is vital those areas make progress.

He noted that encouragingly, early numbers indicate residential solar installations have already risen substantially, and the ongoing cost reductions for both panels and battery systems are making it increasingly feasible for individuals to manage their own energy consumption while also feeding into the national grid.

Other areas performing well included Dorset producing 302,134 megawatt-hours, South Cambridgeshire with 257,056 megawatt-hours, and East Cambridgeshire generating 239,086 megawatt-hours.

Within the South East, Buckinghamshire achieved ninth position nationwide with 194,599 megawatt-hours of solar output.
