Worthing man clears Goring-on-Sea bus stop weeds over elderly safety concerns

Published on

A resident of Worthing has taken action to address safety concerns at a local bus stop after vegetation grew out of control in the area.

The man, Rob Chisholm, noticed that overgrown weeds along Rose Walk in Goring-on-Sea had become so extensive that they were beginning to obscure the transition between the bus stop and the pavement.

The situation raised particular alarm because elderly members of the community could potentially mistake the overgrown vegetation for solid ground and experience a dangerous unexpected drop when stepping off the bus.

Chisholm explained that his concern stemmed partly from personal experience, as his mother is currently aged 92.

He recognised that reduced balance, declining vision, and diminished mobility commonly affect older individuals, making ordinary activities such as boarding and alighting buses significantly more hazardous than they might appear to younger people.

After raising his concerns with the local authority, Chisholm determined that waiting for official intervention would leave the problem unaddressed for too long.

He therefore undertook the task of clearing the most problematic vegetation himself, reasoning that the situation constituted an urgent safety issue requiring immediate attention.

The resident indicated that his experience as a carer had fundamentally altered his awareness of challenges faced by elderly individuals.

He noted that problems affecting older people frequently go unmentioned because they tend to adapt their behaviour rather than complain, simply avoiding activities that have become difficult or risky.

Chisholm observed that his background instructing paragliding students had equipped him with an understanding of risk assessment that proved applicable to everyday situations.

Throughout his teaching career, which extended from 1994 until 2026 when he became a full-time carer, identifying and eliminating hazards formed a core component of his work.

West Sussex County Council has acknowledged resident concerns regarding vegetation obscuring pavement edges and footway boundaries.

A council spokesperson confirmed that Worthing is currently included in the second phase of a county-wide weed treatment programme, which commenced operations recently.

The specific bus stop location identified by Chisholm falls within the scope of the current treatment schedule.

The council indicated that herbicide applications typically require two to three weeks to achieve full effect, after which treated vegetation dies back naturally.

Coordination with Worthing Borough Council is underway to arrange subsequent sweeping of affected areas once the treatment process has been completed.

Residents should observe gradual improvements in visibility and access as weeds recede and accumulated debris is cleared in the weeks ahead.
