A countrywide initiative is harnessing shared meals to address isolation and foster community connections throughout the United Kingdom.

The Extended Table scheme facilitates community dining experiences and culinary-based activities designed to unite participants.

The programme tackles food insecurity alongside social exclusion, with particular focus on vulnerable individuals facing marginalisation.

Financial support of £4.8 million distributed across five years from The National Lottery Community Fund enables delivery through collaboration with Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, Real Farming Trust, NOW Group, Cyrenians, OrganicLea, and Hornbeam Centre.

Vic Borrill, who leads the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership as chief executive, noted that nutrition extends far beyond the contents of a plate.

Daily observations demonstrate how communal eating, skill-building around cooking, and gathering in inclusive environments enable individuals to develop self-assurance, establish friendships, and experience belonging within their local areas.

The organisation expressed enthusiasm about Brighton and Hove occupying a prominent position within this ambitious national undertaking.

Within Brighton and Hove, the initiative will broaden access to community cooking instruction, cultivation projects, and outdoor wellness activities centred on nutrition.

Individuals possessing direct experience of food insecurity will be encouraged to participate in shaping local food strategies and support services.

Kate Beggs, overseeing Northern Ireland operations for The National Lottery Community Fund, highlighted food’s exceptional capacity to unite people, dismantle obstacles, and establish feelings of acceptance.

The Extended Table approach transforms this straightforward concept into something more substantial: strengthening community cohesion, amplifying voices frequently unheard, and influencing how assistance reaches those requiring help.

The programme draws upon academic research examining the importance of eating together.

Oxford University investigations indicate that individuals who regularly share meals with others tend to report greater levels of wellbeing.

The Extended Table will build upon insights gained from earlier initiatives including Ready, Healthy, Eat.

Evidence demonstrates that those initially seeking nutritional support frequently grow to appreciate the companionship and social bonds as considerably as the material assistance provided.

Over the coming five years, the ambition encompasses developing communities that are more welcoming and better equipped to withstand future challenges, using shared food experiences as the driving force behind meaningful transformation.
