A dispute concerning a town centre shopping area affected by accumulated pigeon mess has finally been concluded.
Worthing Borough Council disclosed that an arrangement has been finalised with the proprietors of Montague Quarter following extended periods during which substandard conditions and potential public health hazards had been raised as concerns.
The authority has committed to undertaking responsibility for maintaining the hardstanding surfaces across the privately-held complex, which had suffered from extensive fouling by birds.
The precinct contains distinct portions under the control of Cayuga Developments and St.
Clair Developments respectively.
Previously, the council instructed both firms to enhance upkeep standards and eliminate the accumulation of avian excrement, cautioning that costs for remedial cleaning would be invoiced should remediation not proceed.
Councillor Caroline Baxter, the council leader, labelled the precinct’s condition as wholly unsatisfactory during remarks made the previous month.
The recently concluded accord emerged subsequent to discussions involving council officers and delegates representing both enterprises.
A council representative indicated that whilst advancement was acknowledged, assurances had been provided to Cayuga Developments and St.
Clair Developments regarding the necessity of tackling bird roosting activity persisting within their individual portions of the development.
Addressing this matter would substantially diminish the prevalence of droppings throughout the precinct.
Cleansing operatives undertook pressure-washing and clearance of the surfacing works during the preceding week.
Future operations will target sweeping the grounds on a minimum of two occasions weekly, alongside the installation of two waste receptacles subject to daily collection for a minimum twelve-week timeframe, with potential for prolongation.
Appreciation was conveyed by the council to both organisations for their collaborative approach and to residents for their forbearance throughout the period.
