Brighton care home hosts Woodstock-themed festival for residents

Published on

A residential care facility in Woodingdean, Brighton has staged a nostalgic celebration inspired by the famous Woodstock music festival.

The event at Dean Wood Bupa Care Home formed part of a nationwide initiative by Bupa, which encourages care homes throughout the country to arrange similar vintage-themed activities designed to enhance resident wellbeing.

The festival atmosphere featured performances of beloved songs from the era, residents and staff dressed in period-appropriate attire, and vibrant decorations that transformed the venue into a scene reminiscent of the 1960s and 1970s.

Julie Mullen, who serves as resident experience manager at Dean Wood, explained that the celebration allowed those in attendance to immerse themselves fully in the spirit of the Woodstock era throughout the day.

The occasion was described as highly successful, with overwhelmingly positive responses from residents.

Mullen noted that such gatherings serve a valuable purpose in maintaining resident wellness by promoting interaction with others, triggering fond recollections of the past, encouraging gentle physical activity, and fostering a sense of belonging and meaning in daily life.

Prior to the main festivities, an art session took place in the morning during which residents produced psychedelic-inspired creations reflecting the artistic style of the period.

The pieces incorporated swirling patterns, depictions of dandelions, symbols of peace, and bursts of rainbow colours.

Residents also took the opportunity to exchange stories about life during the 1960s and welcomed family members to join them in the celebrations.

Dean Wood Bupa Care Home, situated on Warren Road, provides both nursing and residential care services, with specialist provision available for individuals affected by dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
