A Sussex parliamentarian has defended volunteers from a maritime rescue organisation following a period of targeted online harassment.
Chris Ward, the representative for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, expressed solidarity with the RNLI after a volunteer in Portsmouth became the subject of unfounded accusations.
The volunteer was labelled a traitor on social media platforms, prompting a torrent of abusive messages directed at both the organisation and its personnel.
Ward stated that the charity’s workers represent true heroism, regularly exposing themselves to peril in service of public safety.
The parliamentarian expressed deep dismay at the offensive remarks that have circulated in recent days.
The MP lauded the commitment and courage displayed by the rescue service’s volunteers, characterising them as an honour to their local community.
Ward conveyed that constituents across his constituency hold the organisation in high esteem, acknowledging the selflessness of those who dedicate their efforts to the charity.
Volunteers dedicate their personal time to maritime rescue operations, frequently confronting hazardous conditions to assist others.
Their work warrants appreciation and recognition rather than hostility.
