Hassocks garden centre seeks Santa for sensory-friendly grotto sessions

Tates of Sussex Garden Centres has begun recruitment efforts to fill a seasonal position at its Hassocks location as the festive period approaches.

The garden centre chain is looking to employ a Santa Claus performer for its sensory-friendly grotto attraction, which will include dedicated sessions catering specifically to children with special educational needs.

According to Ben Tate, executive director at the business, these specialised sessions aim to create a more relaxed atmosphere for visitors who may find conventional crowded settings challenging.

The sessions are designed to be calmer, quieter and less overwhelming for children who struggle in busy environments.

The SEN-inclusive grotto experience features reduced visitor capacity, dimmed lighting, lowered audio levels and additional time allocated for each family group attending.

Visiting families have the opportunity to communicate particular requirements upon arrival, allowing staff to adapt their approach to accommodate each child’s individual needs.

The grotto’s animatronic displays can be deactivated upon request to prevent any distress to young visitors.

The seasonal grotto operates in partnership with The Budding Foundation, a charitable organisation providing support to disadvantaged young people throughout the Sussex region.

Applications for the Santa position can be submitted through the company’s official careers portal.

Ben Tate emphasised that the primary objective behind the initiative is maintaining the enchantment of the Christmas experience while enhancing accessibility and comfort for a broader range of families, ensuring that every child has the chance to meet Santa in a setting that feels appropriate for them.
