Japanese fashion retailer Uniqlo is pursuing plans to establish a presence in Brighton following a submission for advertising consent at Churchill Square shopping centre.
The company has filed an application seeking approval for signage at units 11 to 13 within the centre.
The proposed location spans two floors and includes both an external street entrance and access from inside the shopping complex.
The submission outlines illuminated hanging signs and fascia advertisements featuring the retailer’s signature crimson backdrop alongside white lettering in both English and Japanese scripts.
Carlota Perez lodged the application on behalf of Uniqlo Europe.
While the paperwork focuses primarily on the proposed signage scheme, it strongly implies the company is gearing up to launch a Brighton outlet, a development many local shoppers have anticipated for some time.
Uniqlo previously operated a Brighton store on North Street, which ceased trading on June 23, 2003, having opened its doors in November 2002.
Established in Ube, Japan in 1949, the fashion company has expanded from a single clothing shop into one of the world’s largest retailers.
The brand has built its reputation on understated aesthetic choices, competitive pricing and practical clothing ranges.
The chain has accelerated its European footprint in recent years, maintaining outlets in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Birmingham.
Brighton had previously remained outside its store network.
Churchill Square represents the primary retail destination in Brighton and Hove, hosting in excess of 80 shops, eateries and coffee establishments.
The centre first opened during the 1960s and underwent substantial redevelopment in the late 1990s, drawing millions of visitors annually.
The designated unit had most recently housed fashion retailer H&M.
Ingka Centres, a division of the Ingka Group which serves as the parent company of IKEA, owns Churchill Square.
The parent group inaugurated its own IKEA store within the centre complex last year.
The advertisement consent request covers a permission period stretching from January 18, 2027 through August 18, 2036.
The planning proposal carries the reference BH2026/01996.
