The UK Foreign Secretary has raised the imprisonment of a couple from East Sussex during discussions with Iran’s top diplomat.
Craig and Lindsay Foreman, from East Sussex, were detained by Iranian authorities in January 2024 while travelling through the country on a motorbike trip.
The pair remain held at Evin prison in Tehran.
During talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday September 24, Ed Miliband reiterated calls for the immediate release of Mr and Mrs Foreman, emphasizing that their welfare is a priority for the government.
Miliband also warned that Britain would not tolerate intimidation, threats or hostile activity on UK soil from organisations connected to Iran.
The meeting took place alongside the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to the Foreign Office, the ministers discussed the conflict in the Middle East, the significance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and Britain’s unwavering resolve to combat threats from Iranian-linked groups in the UK.
Mr and Mrs Foreman received 10-year prison sentences in February after being found guilty of espionage, allegations they both reject.
