A new independent magazine retailer has opened its doors in Brighton following a successful launch event that drew strong local interest.
Cover Story, founded by 41-year-old Leah Bancroft, debuted at the Starfish and Coffee venue on Egremont Place on Friday, September 25.
The venture was prompted by the closure of Magazine Brighton, which had operated from Trafalgar Street for seven years before shutting permanently in April 2022.
Bancroft relocated to Hove more than four years ago and observed that the city’s specialist periodical outlet ceased trading just months after her arrival.
The gap in the market prompted her to establish the new business herself.
The shop stocks publications focused on art, photography, music, fashion, and interior design.
Bancroft, a former educator, described the enterprise as an opportunity to combine professional interests with family commitments.
Her husband Jonny, aged 40, contributed to the business development having previously worked within the magazine sector.
The initial pop-up attracted visitors of varying ages who each brought different stories but demonstrated a shared enthusiasm for printed media.
Attendees discussed how the loss of the previous independent retailer had left a void in the local community.
Feedback gathered during the temporary events will inform decisions regarding the product range and physical layout of a proposed permanent premises.
The next trading sessions are scheduled for Saturday October 3 and Sunday October 4 at Komedia’s upper bar area.
Sight and Sound’s managing editor will host a discussion on editing and commissioning during the Sunday session.
Bancroft expressed determination to secure a permanent location for Cover Story while continuing temporary trading throughout October at various venues across Brighton.
