188 years of fishing history comes to Brighton’s North Laine

Published on

A historic fishing equipment business has established a permanent retail space within a Brighton market complex.

The establishment, which claims the title of world’s oldest purveyor of antique, vintage and contemporary classic fishing collectables, has taken up residence at the North Laine flea market.

Trading since 1838, the company has built its reputation on sourcing and supplying rare fishing apparatus to collectors and hobbyists.

Matt Daymond from the company explained that residing in the city and being a longstanding customer of the venue made the partnership a logical progression.

The business operates primarily through online channels, dealing in period and collectable angling gear, so having a tangible shopfront represented a significant development.

He noted that Brighton and fishing share a natural affinity.

The new area showcases an extensive array of historic rods, reels and associated equipment from manufacturers including Hardy, Farlows and Allcock, both British and international.

One notable exhibit includes a Penn Senator reel, a scaled-down variant of the model featured in the film Jaws, with a humorous suggestion that customers could potentially pursue large fish off Brighton Marina.

Snoopers Paradise occupies 7,000 square feet of indoor market space and accommodates in excess of 70 independent retailers, offering goods spanning vintage clothing to mounted specimens.

Jenny Hurren, Communications Manager for the venue, expressed enthusiasm for hosting genuine specialists with profound knowledge of niche vintage areas, describing Thomas Turner as precisely such an operation.

She observed that objects originally designed purely for practical use acquiring their own collectable status held particular fascination.

Visitors could approach the merchandise from multiple perspectives, whether as anglers, collectors, those interested in design and engineering, or simply as individuals drawn to an attractive antique reel and curious about its history.

The experience of encountering something unexpected proved integral to the market’s appeal.

The physical location enables customers to examine and purchase items directly, supplementing the company’s established digital commerce operations.
