A local authority is backing a nationwide initiative designed to combat prejudice-motivated incidents and encourage community members to report concerns.
Mid Sussex District Council has aligned itself with National Hate Crime Awareness Week, scheduled to run from October 10 to October 17, by promoting understanding of hate-fuelled behaviour, the methods available for flagging incidents, and the assistance that exists for those affected.
Anne-Marie Cooke, who serves as cabinet member for communities and communications at the district council, expressed the authority’s commitment to the campaign.
She indicated that community members play a vital role in creating a comprehensive understanding of local issues by reporting their observations and remaining attentive to one another’s welfare.
This collective vigilance enables relevant organisations and support services to implement appropriate responses and maintain Mid Sussex as an inclusive environment for all residents.
Throughout the duration of the awareness week, information will be distributed by the council to assist both residents and local businesses in comprehending the consequences of hate-fuelled criminal activity and the steps that can be taken to challenge such behaviour.
Information points will be established for public interaction at specific locations and times.
East Grinstead Library will host an outreach stall on Monday, October 12, operating between 2pm and 4pm.
On Thursday, October 15, two further stalls will be available from 11am until 1pm, situated at Burgess Hill Market Place and within The Orchards Shopping Centre in Haywards Heath.
These engagement points will provide guidance on identifying instances of hate-motivated crime, outlining the various avenues through which concerns can be reported, and signposting the support services available to victims and witnesses.
Broader issues relating to anti-social conduct will also be addressed through these information sessions.
Hate crimes constitute criminal offences that are prompted by animosity or discrimination directed at individuals based on particular characteristics.
