The tourist information centre currently operating in Lewes is to transfer to new premises.
An agreement between Lewes District Council and the Sussex Archaeological Society will see the facility relocated to Barbican House Museum, which stands opposite Lewes Castle.
The arrangement guarantees the continuation of in-person visitor services within the town and is designed to enhance the experience for tourists, with provisions for weekend access.
Councillor Johnny Denis, the cabinet member responsible for tourism at Lewes District Council, stated that a physical tourist information service remains vital for numerous visitors and local residents.
He expressed satisfaction that an accord had been reached which guarantees the service’s continuation.
By establishing the centre within Barbican House Museum, visitor information would be positioned at one of the town’s principal heritage destinations while simultaneously offering an improved experience for those discovering the district.
Denis expressed gratitude to the Sussex Archaeological Society for its constructive approach throughout the transition and noted that the society would itself benefit from the arrangement.
At a time when tourist information centres were ceasing operations across the United Kingdom, this collaboration ensured the facility could persist in supporting visitors, residents, and the broader hospitality sector.
The relocated centre will maintain its provision of information regarding local attractions, accommodation options, forthcoming events, and transportation links.
The offering will continue to include maps, publications, tickets, and souvenirs.
Officials anticipate the move will boost pedestrian activity throughout the full extent of the High Street.
The arrangement is also expected to deliver improved cost efficiency, enabling greater investment in destination promotion and online engagement to draw additional visitors to the area.
The tourist information centre is anticipated to commence operations from Barbican House Museum within the coming weeks.
Additional information regarding operational details and visiting hours will be published in due course.
Natasha Williams, director of Lewes properties at the Sussex Archaeological Society, noted that the opportunity to host the Lewes Tourist Information Centre within Barbican House Museum would support both visitors to the area and local residents who utilise the service.
She expressed anticipation for close collaboration with Visit Lewes and joint efforts in marketing Lewes and the surrounding region.
