Oxney Estate near Rye begins 2026 grape harvest with volunteer team

Sussex has witnessed remarkable expansion in its wine production over the past two decades.

Vineyards in the county now cover approximately 4,800 hectares across East and West Sussex, representing a significant increase from the roughly 40 establishments operating in the mid-2000s.

Industry observers note this growth trajectory shows no immediate signs of deceleration.

The region accounts for approximately one quarter of all wine produced in the United Kingdom.

While production remains concentrated on the classic varieties of chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier used in traditional-method sparkling wines, a growing segment of winemakers has begun producing still wines, including several notable red varietals.

Oxney Estate, situated in the vicinity of Rye, recently commenced its 2026 harvest.

On Sunday, September 20, volunteers gathered to assist with the grape selection process.

The picking team comprised local wine enthusiasts who meticulously harvested grapes under the supervision of Paul Dobson, one of the estate’s principals.

Participants received refreshments before entering the vineyards.

The 148-hectare estate operates under organic certification granted by the Soil Association.

Owners Kristin Syltevik and Paul Dobson have emphasised their commitment to sustainable land stewardship.

Visitors seeking to explore the estate may attend drop-in cellar-door tastings and retail sessions, available Tuesday through Sunday between 10am and 4pm.

The estate also participates in the Rother Wine Triangle initiative, offering escorted bus tours on Sundays in collaboration with neighbouring vineyards.

Depending on the specific itinerary, guests may be collected from either Rye or Robertsbridge station.

These tours encompass visits to three vineyards, featuring guided tours and tastings of four wines at each location, followed by a lunch service presenting cheese and charcuterie selections.
