A cultural institution in East Sussex has secured a prestigious national honour for its efforts in supporting teenagers and young adults entering the creative sector.
Charleston, situated in the county of East Sussex, was presented with the Best Museum Careers Initiative accolade at the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award 2026.
The announcement was made on Monday, October 12, at an event held in Birmingham.
The recognition highlights the success of the Creative Skills Studio programme, which delivers practical workplace exposure to students of creative industries who are 16 years old and above.
Nick Kidd, who serves as head of learning and participation at Charleston, expressed enthusiasm about the recognition, stating that the honour acknowledges the significant impact the initiative delivers.
He explained that the programme dismantles obstacles facing young individuals who aspire to build careers within museums and galleries, while simultaneously developing fresh talent destined to influence the future of the arts sector.
The Creative Skills Studio operates as a collaboration between Charleston and East Sussex College, equipping participants with hands-on capabilities and professional insights relevant to the industry.
Each year, the initiative delivers in excess of 15,000 hours of vocational placement to more than 600 individuals originating from Lewes, Newhaven, Eastbourne, and Hastings.
Alison Bowyer, serving as executive director of Kids in Museums, extended congratulations to the team at Charleston, noting that participants benefit from an unusual chance to acquire experience through genuine commissions that directly support public events and programming.
