Downlands Community School has been honoured with a national accolade acknowledging its commitment to assisting young carers.
The establishment was presented with the Young Carers in Schools award during August 2026, celebrating its initiatives aimed at students who provide care for family members.
The honour forms part of a nationwide initiative overseen by The Children’s Society and Carers Trust, established to assist educational institutions in recognising and supporting young carers through resources and professional development.
Matt Ashdown, the headteacher at the school, expressed satisfaction at receiving the recognition, stating that the award demonstrates the commitment to providing assistance for young carers within the institution.
He indicated that supporting members of the school community so they feel secure, supported and able to achieve forms a fundamental part of the school’s mission.
The school was acknowledged for implementing a comprehensive strategy that encompasses a designated quiet area within the library, individualised classroom modifications, frequent one-to-one meetings, and continuing professional development for employees.
Kate Turner, who serves as assistant headteacher, conveyed pride in advocating for young carers and acknowledging the significant contributions they make within their households.
Vicky Morgan, representing Carers Trust as head of young carers at Young Adult Carers, noted that the efforts demonstrated by Downlands Community School personnel are invaluable and merit the recognition received.
