A yellow weather warning covering parts of Sussex has been issued as Storm Austen approaches the UK with heavy rain and powerful winds.
Exposed areas could experience gusts exceeding 70mph, with the warning taking effect from midnight and remaining in place until 2pm on Friday (October 23).
The warning applies to Brighton and Hove and southern parts of East and West Sussex.
The Met Office forecasts westerly to northwesterly winds across southern England and Wales from Thursday night through Friday.
Gusts of 50 to 60mph are expected, while coastal and exposed locations may experience 70mph or higher, particularly in parts of southwest England.
Austen is the first named storm of the 2026/27 season.
Its arrival is expected to disrupt transport, increase the possibility of power cuts and cause damage to some buildings.
Road, rail, air and ferry services could face delays or cancellations, while certain roads and bridges may need to close.
Bright conditions are forecast at the start of Thursday (October 22) in Brighton, before cloud and rain arrive later in the day.
Friday’s winds are expected to be strongest from late morning until early afternoon before gradually subsiding.
Saturday (October 24) is forecast to remain windy with additional rain.
Drier and brighter weather is expected on Sunday (October 25), when temperatures in Brighton could reach around 14C.
The Met Office has advised people to secure loose outdoor objects, including bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences.
Travellers have been encouraged to check road conditions and bus and train timetables, and to amend plans where necessary.
Those visiting coastal areas should take care around large waves, while walkers near cliffs should plan their route and keep dogs on a lead.
