Railway letterbox at Sussex stop aims to support ex-forces without homes

A fresh initiative is bringing optimism to former service members without stable housing at a Sussex railway terminal.

Greater Thameslink Railway has unveiled a protected postal service at Crawley station in collaboration with Squaddie Box, a charitable group assisting homeless ex-service personnel and emergency services workers in rebuilding their lives by supplying them with a fixed correspondence address.

The facility offers round-the-clock availability to a secured post box, enabling recipients to collect their letters dependably – an essential requirement for obtaining medical care, jobs, and assistance programmes.

Andrew Mahoney, co-founder of GTR’s Armed Forces Network, stated that the company is honoured to have introduced GTR’s inaugural Squaddie Box at Crawley station, which will aid veterans and emergency responders in reintegrating into community life, reaching support services, and moving toward steady work and self-sufficiency.

Crawley was selected as GTR’s pilot site for its initial Squaddie Box because of persistent accommodation difficulties, after Crawley Borough Council announced a housing crisis in 2024.

Dean Wormleighton, CEO and founder of Squaddie Box, stated that collaborating with GTR to open their Squaddie Box facility at Crawley station marks an important achievement for the programme, as it represents the fourth pod established since the scheme commenced in July 2025.

Their initial Squaddie Box recipient managed to enrol with a doctor almost right after obtaining access to a Squaddie Box and re-established contact with broader assistance networks that had previously been challenging to reach.

This illustrates that Squaddie Box involves considerably more than receiving correspondence – it concerns rebuilding self-respect, chances, and optimism.

The inaugural Crawley participant in the programme, former serviceman Chris Powis who was without permanent accommodation, registered for the postal facility before its formal launch on June 24.

Mr Powis spent 13 years enlisted in the British Army prior to experiencing homelessness.

The post box stands near the station car park on Station Way, with those wanting to register advised to do so through the Squaddie Box website.

GTR’s Armed Forces Network donated £1,000 toward the initiative.

Crawley complements three existing Squaddie Box locations – in Hastings, Clacton-on-Sea, and Rustington.

The programme has also broadened its reach to assist the general homeless population through an analogous scheme named Civvie Box.
