Six pensioners arrested at protest in Sussex town

Six people were arrested at a protest in a Sussex town.

On April 11, members of Hastings and District Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a protest on Hastings promenade.

The group said they hosted the “witness circle” to show solidarity with those challenging the proscription of Palestine Action.

Last year, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced her intention to proscribe Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation, which was later approved by the House of Commons.

However in February this year, a high court ruling found the government’s decision to be unlawful.

Despite this, the organisation is still legally proscribed while further hearings and a likely government appeal are dealt with.

At the protest last week, protesters held signs including some which read “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.”

Officers attended and six people from Hastings were arrested.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “Police responded to a protest in Hastings on Saturday 11 April to facilitate a peaceful protest while minimising the disruption to the wider community.

“Six people from Hastings – an 82-year-old man, an 87-year-old man, a 75-year-old woman , a 76-year-old woman, a 71-year-old woman and 72-year-old woman – were arrested on suspicion of expressing support of a proscribed organisation.

“All have since been released on bail. The investigation has now been handed over to Counter Terrorism Policing South East.

“A 67-year-old man from Hastings was also arrested but was later released without further action.”

The group criticised the police response, sharing a number of videos of the arrests on social media.

It described the police action as an “out of proportion response to a peaceful, silent action held by a handful of local pensioners”.
