Road blighted by landslide to close for 11 days in latest disruption

A road that has been blighted by issues resulting from a landslide will close for 11 days later this month.

The A29 Church Hill in Pulborough will be closed from April 20 to April 30 to allow for tree works to take place.

The closure is necessary so that concrete supporting blocks at the side of the road can be temporarily moved and vehicles and machinery can gain access.

The concrete blocks are in place to prevent the embankments becoming further unstable.

It is the latest disruption to impact the road, which has been only partly accessible to traffic following a landslide in late December 2022.

The closure will be enforced 24 hours a day from 12.01am on April 20 to 11.59pm on April 30.

West Sussex County Council originally set up single-file traffic arrangements in April 2023, but an ongoing stalemate with the landowners of the embankments means that the issue has remained unresolved for years.

The council is unable to undertake work without approval from the landowners, and served statutory notices requiring them to carry out certain tree works in February 2024.

These were later appealed, but the appeals were dismissed in January earlier this year, paving the way for work to take place to remove dead, dying and insecurely rooted trees.

Geo-technical experts have previously warned that fully reopening the road without addressing the underlying issues would pose a significant safety risk.
