Haywards Heath-Lewes railway line reopens after recovery from derailment

Published on

A railway route in southern England resumed service on September 1 after a derailment incident last month prompted extensive reconstruction work.

The section connecting Haywards Heath and Lewes had been closed since August 13, when a train left the tracks in the vicinity of Lewes.

Construction crews conducted continuous operations to extract the carriages, repair the damaged earthworks, and reinstall railway infrastructure throughout the affected area.

The salvage operation required the removal of all eight vehicles from the site.

Specialised Kirow lifting equipment was deployed to raise the derailed carriages.

Engineers subsequently built temporary structural supports to accommodate heavy machinery needed for the restoration.

The location’s nearness to the River Ouse and its protected environmental designation introduced additional technical difficulties, necessitating collaboration between construction specialists and environmental specialists.

The customers services director at Greater Thameslink Railway, which manages Southern Railway services, expressed sympathy for individuals who sustained injuries during the incident and acknowledged the impact on their families and the wider community.

The official noted that the line closure created considerable inconvenience for travellers and local residents.

Appreciation was extended to passengers for their tolerance and flexibility throughout the repair period.

According to the director, the line’s reopening resulted from the exceptional dedication of engineering personnel who laboured under demanding conditions to restore operations safely and swiftly.

The Network Rail Sussex route director described the recovery as a technically demanding operation and recognised engineering staff and industry partners for their professionalism and commitment in completing the work safely and efficiently.

The director offered continued thoughts to all those impacted, including hospitalised individuals and their relatives.

Gratitude was also expressed to residents of the Landport area and the broader Lewes community for their patience and cooperation while work crews operated in the neighbourhood, acknowledging that such projects inevitably cause disruption.
