A celebration of eight women who have dedicated themselves to supporting others across Sussex will take place at Plumpton Racecourse this month.
The gathering, rescheduled from its original May date following an equine flu outbreak in the area, marks the beginning of the autumn racing programme on Sunday, September 20.
The honourees, collectively referred to as the Sussex Heroines, have been selected in recognition of their exceptional commitment to charitable causes and volunteer work throughout the county.
Plumpton Racecourse management has arranged for the group to attend the fixture as guests, with the afternoon programme centring on a fashion presentation specifically designed to highlight their contributions.
A hat showcase will unfold prior to the first race, featuring millinery created by local designer Joanna Zara.
Zara explained that the designs aim to honour the recipients’ dedication and compassion, positioning them as the focal point of the presentation.
Guy Chadwell, chief executive at Plumpton Racecourse, stated that these individuals contribute significantly to the local community without seeking acknowledgment.
Providing this occasion at the racecourse represented a fitting method to demonstrate appreciation for everything they undertake.
The eight recipients span diverse charitable organisations across the region.
Sarah Otway represents Chailey Heritage Foundation, while Debbie West contributes to Safe in Sussex.
Sue Darnell serves the Dame Vera Lynn Trust, and Fiona O’Leary works with Sussex Cancer Fund.
Additional honourees include Maureen Middlemiss and Jackie Grier from Together Co, alongside Alice Thomas and Kaylee Teaker, who support St Peter and St James Hospice.
