YHA Festival of Walking brings free family walks to Kent and Sussex

A nationwide walking celebration is inviting households to exchange digital entertainment for outdoor activities this autumn season.

The YHA Festival of Walking provides complimentary, led walks departing from Youth Hostels throughout England and Wales, with multiple events scheduled in Kent and Sussex regions.

Andrew McCoy, programme manager for the YHA Festival of Walking, explained that the complimentary, family-oriented guided walks offer a practical method for households to develop outdoor confidence while exposing younger individuals to natural surroundings.

He noted that these walks establish opportunities to disconnect from screens, spend time in the open air together and establish authentic connections with the natural world.

The celebration, now in its fourth edition, receives backing from Sport England and continues through Sunday, October 11.

This year’s event represents the largest programme to date, featuring a complimentary schedule comprising as many as 60 organised group walks.

Seven guided walks have been arranged at YHA hostels located at South Downs, Truleigh Hill and Canterbury.

Activities encompass family-appropriate walks, mindfulness paths and navigation instruction for those new to hiking.

Booking in advance is required to obtain a spot.

Walks cater to all age groups and capability levels, with options available for families with young children and women-only groups.

Each route follows a circular path beginning and concluding at a Youth Hostel, where participants receive a complimentary beverage and slice of cake.
