British Food Fortnight concludes this weekend, wrapping up the annual celebration of the range and quality of produce cultivated throughout the United Kingdom.

Brighton & Hove boasts a vibrant culinary scene comprising approximately 1,200 restaurants, pubs, and coffee shops.

In November 2020, the city became the first location nationwide to achieve the Gold Sustainable Food Place Award, recognising innovative efforts in promoting responsible food practices.

The award brought ÂŁ155,000 in government funding to enhance food procurement procedures, expand access to nutritious and environmentally conscious food options, and assist local enterprises in navigating public sector supply chains for institutions such as schools and hospitals.

A portion of these resources has been directed toward a regional effort aimed at increasing the presence of Sussex-sourced produce and beverages within commercial establishments.

The Sussex Six initiative encourages hospitality and retail companies to commit to stocking or featuring a minimum of six locally produced food and drink items or components.

The programme operates under the management of Natural Partnerships, a community interest company focused on regional food, beverage, and agricultural ventures.

Seventeen establishments have enrolled in the Sussex Six initiative thus far, with officials acknowledging that additional businesses could benefit from participation.

Enterprises already providing local produce but not prepared to make a formal commitment may be included in a directory of Sussex food and drink suppliers, outlets, dining establishments, and catering services through the sussexfoodanddrink.org platform.

The Brighton & Hove Food Strategy was originally introduced in 2006 to outline the city’s vision for establishing a nutritious, sustainable, and equitable food system.

The strategy falls under the direction of Brighton & Hove Food Partnership, which commemorates its twentieth anniversary this year, with oversight provided by the Food Strategy Expert Panel comprising representatives from the local authority, commercial sector, academic institutions, healthcare services, and charitable organisations.

Multiple schemes throughout the city support this work and provide residents with access to high-quality, nutritious, and sustainable provisions.

Food Use Places unites eighteen Sussex-based organisations with the goal of decreasing food and packaging waste.

The collective engages with communities frequently overlooked by environmental initiatives through activities including composting, cooking workshops, and communal meals, enabling participants to develop new competencies and adopt more resourceful habits.

The Good Food Procurement Group promotes effective approaches and highlights the advantages of sourcing and serving wholesome provisions.

This collective is led by Brighton & Hove Food Partnership and encompasses the local council, health service, higher education institutions, schools, nursery providers, residential care facilities, workplaces, and venues that collectively provide over one million meals monthly.

The University of Brighton and Restaurants Brighton have jointly developed a complimentary Sustainability Toolkit to assist hospitality enterprises in Brighton & Hove in implementing measures addressing ecological and social responsibility.

The resource supplies suggestions and direction for enhancing aspects ranging from procurement and energy consumption to employee welfare and community engagement.

The Food Support Network operates under the coordination of Brighton & Hove Food Partnership, linking fifty food banks and affordable food initiatives across the city that collectively assist approximately 6,000 individuals weekly.

Farm School represents a collaborative venture involving the council, tenant farmers, educational institutions, and the Changing Chalk partnership, connecting primary schools with regional agricultural operations.

The initiative offers children direct exposure to farming and habitat preservation.

Ground for Growing assists schools in designing and establishing food cultivation areas to facilitate experiential learning, personal wellbeing, and community cohesion.

The programme debuted at Goldstone Primary School, with this expertise subsequently deployed to support an additional ten schools in introducing food growing activities for their pupils.
