New alliance launched to tackle Sussex electrician shortage

A fresh partnership has been established to combat recruitment challenges within the electrical sector.

The Sussex Electrotechnical Training and Careers Alliance, under the leadership of the Electrical Contractors’ Association, seeks to develop a more robust flow of certified electrical professionals throughout the county.

The collaboration was officially introduced at Brighton Metropolitan College, uniting businesses, educational institutions, manufacturers and skills development bodies to confront present and anticipated capability gaps.

Keith Sanderson, who serves as the association’s head of education and skills, explained that the construction of housing, critical infrastructure and renewable energy installations across Sussex depends entirely upon having an adequate pool of trained electrical workers.

He added that the new alliance creates opportunities for industry representatives, training establishments and skills agencies to collaborate directly, concentrating on solutions tailored to the Sussex area, including enhanced qualification routes and improved career guidance.

Priority areas for the partnership include simplifying access to financial support, strengthening apprenticeship schemes, assisting with local hiring efforts and guaranteeing that educational programmes satisfy sector demands.

Nathan Smith, representing Steve Rooke Ltd and serving on the association’s National Skills Committee, noted the significant participation from regional companies, colleges, training providers and important stakeholders.

He described the event as both educational and productive, allowing conversations about workforce capabilities to occur on a localised platform, which he identified as frequently neglected.

The alliance additionally intends to amplify industry perspectives during qualification standard reviews and raise awareness of electrical trade opportunities across Sussex.
