Woodgate Community Shop wins King’s Foundation award for sustainable model

A pioneering retail outlet has emerged as a model for sustainable community development in England.

Woodgate Community Shop, situated in Pease Pottage within a 619-property residential scheme, has achieved the distinction of being the inaugural community-owned enterprise of its type at a newly constructed housing development.

The venture represents a collaboration between Plunkett UK and construction firm Thakeham, with both organisations recently receiving recognition through The King’s Foundation’s Community Award for their collaborative efforts.

As deputy chief executive of Plunkett UK, Harriet English explained that the project demonstrates the potential outcomes when community ownership forms an integral part of development planning from the beginning.

By offering residents the chance to establish and operate a business tailored to their requirements, communities can be fostered where individuals develop genuine connections and investment in their local area.

Thakeham constructed and donated the retail premises, while Plunkett UK supplied guidance and specialist assistance to enable residents to launch and manage the enterprise.

The establishment commenced operations in May 2024 and operates through a combination of paid employees and volunteers.

Surplus revenue generated by the business is directed back into community initiatives.

Sarah Crush, serving as social value manager at Thakeham, noted that providing the physical space and assisting residents in launching their own commercial venture had resulted in a local amenity that residents can influence and maintain for years to come.
