Storm Austen: Horsham fireworks cancelled as Sussex braces for 70mph winds

Published on

Storm Austen is expected to bring strong winds and rain to Sussex this weekend, prompting weather warnings and the cancellation of a Horsham Sports Club event.

The Horsham Sports Club Committee announced that the club’s fireworks display had been cancelled.

The committee said the decision had been made with great sadness, adding that fireworks were among the club’s largest annual fundraising activities and were enjoyed by many people.

It said the decision had not been taken lightly.

According to the Met Office, strong west to northwesterly winds are forecast to reach Sussex, with speeds generally around 50–60mph.

Coastal and exposed areas could experience winds of 70mph or more.

The worst conditions are expected from late Thursday night through Friday.

Eastbourne Borough Council has announced that the seafront bandstand will close on Friday.

Parts of the promenade will also be shut because high winds and heavy rain could make the area potentially hazardous.
