Consultation opens on three options for Hove Floral Clock site

Published on

A public consultation has been launched by Brighton and Hove City Council regarding the future of the Floral Clock located in Palmeira Square.

The landmark was originally placed in the area in 1953 as a commemoration of the Queen’s coronation.

For several years the mechanism has ceased to function and council officials have determined that restoration is no longer feasible.

Three possible replacements have been identified for the site.

One proposal involves installing an armillary sphere, while another suggests erecting a static clock display set to 19:53.

A third option would involve handing over management of the location to a local community organisation.

Residents will have the opportunity to examine these proposals at two information events.

The first takes place on Tuesday, October 6 between 1pm and 3pm at the Cornerstone Community Centre.

A second session is scheduled for Thursday, October 8 from 3pm until 5pm at Palmeira Square in proximity to where the original feature stood.

Councillor Alan Robins, the cabinet member responsible for sports, recreation and libraries, acknowledged that determining the fate of the Floral Clock required careful consideration.

He stated that the authority was proceeding thoughtfully while maintaining dialogue with local residents to evaluate various alternatives.

Councillor Robins expressed his hope that community members would take advantage of the scheduled drop-in sessions and contribute their perspectives to the consultation process, enabling the development of a feature that would eventually earn similar affection to its predecessor.
