Filming has commenced in a Sussex town for a new television project from the creators of a popular comedy series.
James Corden and Ruth Jones, responsible for writing and starring in Gavin and Stacey, have been spotted recording scenes for their forthcoming comedy drama The Choir in Lewes this week.
Production crews have established the East Sussex town as the setting for the fictional location of Alderswyck.
Local resident Kath Owston captured photographs of Corden filming outside the Oxfam store on High Street, which has undergone temporary transformation to serve as a Post Office for the production.
The former Lloyds Bank premises has been dressed to represent a fictional banking establishment, while an adjacent municipal building has become the Alderswyck Council Office.
According to Kath, who resides in South Street, residents received advance notification several months prior regarding plans for a significant production in the area.
Letters were distributed to households inquiring about potential use of properties as the residence for the characters portrayed by Corden and Jones, with an offer of six thousand pounds extended to interested parties.
Multiple addresses on South Street received such correspondence, and numerous residents expressed willingness to participate.
Although the production ultimately selected an alternative property for the characters’ home, Kath confirmed that her residence would serve a purpose during filming scheduled to take place on South Street later in the month.
The property would function as a holding area for Corden while scenes were recorded in the street.
Kath also documented filming activity in Lewes High Street and observed Corden departing from Fitzroy House.
The resident expressed hope that the production would deliver positive economic benefits for the town and its commercial enterprises during challenging times for independent retailers.
Describing herself as an admirer of Gavin and Stacey, Kath voiced enthusiasm about seeing the creative partnership between Corden and Jones continue on a new project.
Apple has announced that The Choir will consist of eight episodes exploring themes of family, kinship, romance and music.
The series marks the inaugural collaboration between Jones and Corden since the broadcast of Gavin and Stacey: The Finale.
The pair will portray siblings Ben and Lisa, who have been separated for several years.
Ben has spent time living overseas, while Lisa has remained in their childhood town.
Apple has confirmed that production is underway with a global release scheduled for 2027.
A specific broadcast date has not yet been announced publicly.
