Research has identified Brighton as the location with the greatest density of independent bakeries in the United Kingdom, securing its position at the top of a new nationwide study.
The investigation, conducted by insurance provider Hiscox, determined that Brighton maintains 22 independent bakeries for every 100,000 inhabitants.
This figure places the Sussex city ahead of Newcastle and Edinburgh, which each registered 16 establishments per 100,000 residents.
The research combined geographical mapping information from OpenStreetMap with consumer search trends on Google to assess the state of independent baking businesses throughout Britain.
Brighton’s prominence extended beyond mere establishment numbers.
The coastal city also claimed second position nationally for consumer purchasing interest, with 2,428 bakery-related searches per 100,000 residents.
Edinburgh occupied the leading spot for search demand.
The study arrives during what Hiscox characterised as an ongoing expansion of bakery businesses across the country.
The research indicated that queries for local bakeries have grown by 50 percent compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 368,000 monthly searches on average.
Searches containing the phrase cinnamon bun increased by 128 percent, while pastry-related queries rose by 50 percent.
Manchester and Sheffield shared fourth position in the density assessment, with each city recording 12 independent bakeries per 100,000 residents.
Bristol took sixth place with nine establishments per 100,000 residents.
Nick Thornhill, Partnerships Director at Hiscox UK, commented that the flourishing of independent bakeries across numerous British cities reflects consumer interest in quality local products.
He noted that whether customers purchase fresh bread on their commute or have developed routine visits to neighbourhood bakeries, demand for handmade goods continues to strengthen.
Thornhill added that while market interest remains robust, bakery proprietors must also address practical considerations including workforce management, equipment maintenance, supply networks and financial planning to ensure long-term viability as their businesses expand.
The analysis identified growing consumer interest in artisan breads, pastries and other baked products, a trend that analysts have termed the little treat economy.
This phenomenon describes purchasing behaviour where individuals seek accessible everyday indulgences.
Brighton hosts numerous independent bakeries, spanning traditional family operations through to establishments specialising in sourdough products and artisanal pastries.
This variety has helped establish the city as a prominent culinary destination within Britain.
