With Halloween nearing, a new AskGamblers ranking has placed Brighton Racecourse second among 60 UK courses for reported haunted activity.
According to the Paranormal Database, Brighton has been linked to 147 reports, the highest total recorded for any racecourse town in Britain.
Brighton Racecourse also stands 0.07 miles from City Cemetery, while racing has taken place on its present site since 1783.
Chester occupies first place with a score of 8.27 out of 10.
Brighton follows with 8.13 and ranks as the leading course in Sussex, well ahead of Plumpton, Goodwood and Fontwell Park.
The ranking was based on three measures: the distance between each racecourse and its nearest cemetery or churchyard, the length of time racing has been recorded at the venue, and the quantity of paranormal reports associated with its town.
An additional point was awarded when a course had a documented ghost or curse story, including the ghosts associated with Chester’s grandstand.
Each haunted score was calculated by averaging the three measures, adding any bonus point and limiting the result to a maximum of 10.
The findings showed that 42 of the 60 racecourses are situated within half a mile of a cemetery or churchyard, while 56 lie within one mile.
