A large-scale reflective artwork will bring a distinctive visual experience to a Sussex shopping centre this autumn.
MIRROR MIRROR, conceived by Irish-born conceptual artist Ornagh, will occupy Priory Meadow Shopping Centre in Hastings between September 18 and 20.
The exhibition forms part of the Coastal Currents Arts Festival programme.
The piece comprises 36 illuminated mirrors adorned with 250 red and white lights.
Each reflective surface displays handwritten messages created using lipstick.
Speaking about the project, Ornagh explained that the initial concept originated from a deeply personal experience, though the work is designed to transcend individual circumstance.
The artist expressed interest in how personal narratives constantly evolve and how individuals can perceive themselves differently within remarkably short timeframes.
According to Ornagh, the work explores what occurs when individual expression encounters another person’s interpretation through reflection.
Visitors are encouraged to contemplate questions of personal identity, self-perception and the fluid nature of internal storytelling.
The exhibition incorporates augmented reality technology.
Attendees can use mobile devices to access additional video content and virtual characters layered over the physical installation.
MIRROR MIRROR represents a component of Ornagh’s wider artistic ambition to develop an extended reality sculpture garden that merges tangible and digital environments.
Funding has been provided by Arts Council England, with sponsorship from Superior Scaffolding.
The venue offers complimentary admission and maintains full wheelchair accessibility.
The installation welcomes visitors of all ages.
