Sussex stargazers prepare for full Corn Moon visibility this weekend

Skywatchers will have an opportunity to observe a full moon illuminating the night sky this weekend.

Sussex offers favourable conditions for viewing September’s full Corn Moon, which is anticipated to appear especially luminous throughout the county.

The Corn Moon derives its designation from agricultural traditions.

The phenomenon is alternatively referred to as the Barley Moon or Harvest Moon.

The Royal Museums Greenwich website provides an explanation for the moon’s nomenclature.

According to the institution, September’s full Corn Moon receives its name because this period marks the completion of the summer harvest when crops are collected.

During this time, the moon exhibits particularly bright illumination and rises at an early hour, enabling agricultural workers to continue their harvesting activities after dark.

This lunar event is additionally designated as the barley moon and frequently represents the full moon occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, thereby acquiring the harvest moon designation.

The Corn Moon is anticipated to be observable on Saturday, 26 September, with moonrise in the capital projected at approximately 5:49pm.

Sussex offers several recommended locations for witnessing the September full moon.

Optimal viewing conditions in the United Kingdom generally require open, elevated areas characterised by minimal artificial lighting and unobstructed sightlines toward the eastern horizon.

Five locations within Sussex have been identified as suitable viewing spots: Devil’s Dyke in the South Downs National Park Ditchling Beacon Seven Sisters Country Park Cuckmere Haven Ashdown Forest Observers are advised to arrive at their chosen location between 30 and 45 minutes prior to moonrise to secure an advantageous position and guarantee an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon.

Consulting weather predictions regarding cloud conditions before departing is also recommended.

Optical aids such as binoculars may improve the experience by revealing additional surface features.

Individuals intending to photograph the event should utilise a tripod or other stable surface to minimise image blur, particularly when employing a smartphone device.
