The coastal town of Littlehampton in West Sussex has built a reputation as an attractive destination for families and day-trippers seeking seaside recreation and historical charm.

Situated along the English Channel on the southern coast of England, the town occupies a position on the eastern bank where the River Arun meets the sea, placing it within the Arun district.

The settlement’s origins trace back to prehistoric and Roman periods, when the area served as a modest fishing community.

Historical records indicate the town appeared in the Domesday Book under the designation Hantone.

Between 1610 and 1695, the name evolved to Littlehampton to establish distinction from the larger port city of Southampton further along the coast.

Throughout subsequent centuries, the town developed as a significant port facility.

In 1735, workers constructed a new river mouth entrance and erected a wooden harbour structure.

During this developmental phase, the locality occasionally bore the alternative name Arundel Port.

By the eighteenth century, Littlehampton had begun transitioning from its traditional fishing economy toward becoming a recognised holiday resort destination.

The dual function as both a working port and a leisure destination stimulated commercial expansion throughout the nineteenth century, a period that also brought railway connections and a cross-channel ferry operation serving Honfleur in northern France.

During the 1920s, the town acquired the informal title of The Children’s Paradise, reflecting its growing appeal to families seeking coastal holidays.

Following the conclusion of the Second World War, residential construction programmes extended the municipal boundaries to incorporate the surrounding villages of Wick, Lyminster, and Toddington.

Simultaneously, the local economy shifted focus toward boat building enterprises and water sports activities.

Contemporary Littlehampton provides an array of attractions catering to visitors across all age groups.

The destination has been characterised by regional tourism sources as a valuable option for family seaside excursions.

The town features two distinct coastal areas: East Beach and West Beach, with East Beach having received recognition among the United Kingdom’s premier shorelines.

Adjacent to East Beach stands the distinctive East Beach Café, a structure designed by the acclaimed architect Thomas Heatherwick, whose portfolio includes numerous award-winning projects.

Visitors seeking active pursuits can access escape room facilities, crazy golf courses, and various water sporting opportunities.

Those preferring more tranquil experiences may explore the West Beach boardwalk, a promenade traversing protected coastal dune environments.

West Beach achieved formal conservation status in 1995 when authorities designated it a Local Nature Reserve, and it subsequently received classification as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its ecological significance.

For visitors interested in traditional seaside cuisine, Mussel Row provides an established venue for consuming fish and chips while enjoying views across the estuary and the nearby Littlehampton Golf Club facilities.

The town has also attracted attention from prominent figures in the entertainment industry.

The actor Tom Hardy, recognised for performances in productions including Peaky Blinders, The Dark Knight Rises, Venom, and Inception, has visited Littlehampton on multiple occasions.

During the previous year, Hardy spent time at Harbour Park, where he participated in arcade entertainment alongside companions and their children.

Individuals who encountered him during these visits reported finding him to be exceptionally approachable.

Hardy’s connections to the broader Sussex region extend beyond Littlehampton.

In April of the preceding year, he collaborated with retired Sussex Police canine Bear for promotional activities connected to his film Havoc.

He has also been observed attending a school sports event in Crawley and making retail visits in Brighton’s North Laine commercial district.

Other notable personalities have maintained associations with the town.

The broadcaster Paul O’Grady previously resided in Littlehampton, and the author Ian Fleming, creator of the James Bond fictional series, played a role in establishing No.

30 Commando, a military unit operating from the town during the Second World War.

With its multifaceted heritage, diverse attractions, and connections to well-known personalities, Littlehampton maintains its appeal as a destination drawing visitors from throughout the region and beyond.
