City centre roads closed after ambulance crashes into scaffolding

North Road in Brighton has been closed off due to an emergency incident.

A section of the road near Helm Gallery has been cordoned off.

In the cordon, construction workers can be seen clearing scaffolding poles.

Jubilee Street has also been closed with police blocking traffic from both ends.

Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for further information.

Police have reopened the road and the cordon has been removed.

Sussex Police confirmed officers attended after an ambulance collided with scaffolding.

Ambulance was not carrying any patients

A spokeswoman for South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAM) confirmed the ambulance was responding to a call in the area but was not carrying any patients.

It said: “We can confirm that one of our ambulances was involved in a single-vehicle collision involving scaffolding on North Road, Brighton shortly after 10:00hrs today (15 April).

“The ambulance was responding to a call in the area at the time of the collision and was not carrying any patients. Other vehicles had been assigned to this incident and continued to the scene.

“Ambulance clinicians attended the collision to assess the crew who were discharged from our care on scene with no injuries reported.”

Fire service statement

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire Rescue Service said: “We were called at 10.02am on 15 April to reports of a single vehicle collision involving scaffolding on North Road, Brighton.

“Firefighters liaised with the scaffolding company to release the vehicle and support with scene safety.”
