Fears for future of town bonfire event as numbers fall

A popular bonfire event could be under threat.

The Littlehampton Bonfire Society has voiced concerns about the future of its yearly event, which is facing uncertainty due to a decline in membership.

Despite being free to attend, the traditional bonfire event costs upwards of £35,000 to organise.

As a result, the society relies heavily on volunteers for various tasks, especially leading up to the event.

However, membership numbers have hit an all-time low, raising concerns about the potential continuation of the celebration in the forthcoming years.

With a proud 73-year history, the bonfire event has grown in size and significance over the years.

Each year, roughly 20,000 spectators visit the event, which consists of a traditional Sussex torchlight parade, with bonfire and fireworks.

It is already confirmed the event will not be happening around Halloween this year.

It will instead be happening on October 24, 2026, and will be operated by a reduced and ageing membership.

The society is urging people of all ages and capabilities to join as members and participate in vital tasks such as preparation, clean up and fundraising activities.

It is emphasising the importance of being able to execute physical tasks specifically during the week of the event.

In addition to event-critical tasks, members also assist in creating the thousands of torches needed for the celebration.

This is a physically demanding but enriching activity carried out throughout summer.

Members are given tutelage to carry out this work.

All those wanting to get involved should visit www.littlehamptonbonfiresociety.co.uk or email secretary@littlehamptonbonfiresociety.co.uk.

Those interested in being a part of the Littlehampton Bonfire Society can expect to partake in planning, fundraising and organising the yearly event, with the bonus of socialising at various events throughout the year.

Members also have the option to attend ‘out-meetings,’ which are other parades during the summer, as well as bonfire events in autumn.

For those not keen on becoming a full member, the society still welcomes volunteers for jobs during the bonfire week, such as marshals, street collectors, as well as parade participants with illuminated floats or walking groups.
