Legendary F1 world champion to drive his title-winning car at event in Sussex

A legendary F1 world champion will drive his title-winning car at a meeting in Sussex.

Jenson Button, winner of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship, will take the wheel of his Brawn GP car at the Goodwood Motor Circuit for a special demonstration during the 83rd Members’ Meeting.

The event in April marks Button’s first time driving the car at Goodwood.

Jenson Button said: “I am excited to be making my Members’ Meeting debut – and in no less special a car than the Brawn BGP 001.

“I last had a chance to drive it back in 2019, which was incredibly emotional and quite surreal. I cannot wait to experience that feeling all over again, and where better than Goodwood!”

In 2009, Ross Brawn purchased the remains of Honda’s abandoned F1 team for £1.

Against the odds, the newly formed Brawn GP team returned to the grid and went on to achieve one of the sport’s greatest fairy tale seasons.

The car’s white and fluorescent yellow livery quickly became iconic, helped by its nearly blank bodywork, with early backing from Richard Branson’s Virgin brand.

Mr Button won six of the first seven races that season. He built an early lead in the championship, dominating in a car that outpaced many better-funded rivals.

Although Sebastian Vettel mounted a late challenge, Mr Button’s early-season dominance proved unassailable.

The championship was sealed at the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix, where Mr Button staged a dramatic comeback drive.

The race secured both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles for Brawn GP, capping off a season that left fans and paddock insiders alike full of emotion.

Mr Button retired in 2025, concluding his career in the World Endurance Championship with the Cadillac Hertz Team Jota team.

His return to the cockpit of the Brawn car is one of the standout moments of this year’s Members’ Meeting.

The Brawn GP story is widely regarded as one of Formula 1’s most compelling underdog tales.

Mr Button’s return to the car at Goodwood is expected to be one of the highlights of the 2024 motorsport calendar.

The 83rd Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport takes place at Goodwood Motor Circuit, April 18-19, with Mr Button scheduled to complete two high-speed runs in the Brawn BGP001.
